Zack Greinke nabbed the first of what could be a slew of postseason honors Wednesday.
The Sporting News named the Royals’ ace its American League Pitcher of the year. Due to lackluster run support, Greinke picked up only 16 wins but led Major League Baseball with his 2.16 ERA. He finished second in the AL with 242 strikeouts in 229 1/3 innings pitched.
His strikeout total fell two shy of matching the Royals’ club record.
Greinke must wait another four weeks to see if he earns the AL Cy Young award, which could hinge on his win total falling three short of AL leader C.C. Sabathia’s 19. Since 1995, the winner of The Sporting News’ award has also gone on to claim the Cy Young Award every year. The AL Cy Young winner will be announced on Nov. 17.
The Baseball Writers Association of America selects the winner of that award.
San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum took home The Sporting News’ Pitcher of the Year for the National League.
