CARROLLTON, Mo. — A Chillicothe, Mo., man died Tuesday night in a head-on collision with a semi on U.S. Highway 65, about three miles north of Carrollton.

John L. Nelson, 65, was pronounced dead at about 10:35 p.m. Tuesday at the Lafayette County Regional Hospital in Lexington, Mo.

The accident occurred a little after 8 p.m., as Mr. Nelson was headed north on Highway 65 in a 1998 Dodge with Patricia Zullig, 75, and Ann James, 60, also from Chillicothe. Mr. Nelson moved into the southbound lane to pass another vehicle and ran head-on into a 2004 Freightliner driven by Milo Wolterman, 72, of Arcadia, Iowa. The semi traveled off the highway and caught fire. Mr. Wolterman suffered minor injuries at the scene and declined treatment.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Ms. James suffered minor injuries and Ms. Zullig had moderate injures. The women were transported by ambulance to the Carroll County Memorial Hospital. Ms. Zullig was airlifted by medical helicopter to St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City. No report on the condition of the women was available Wednesday.
