Benedictine roughs up listless Culver-Stockton

ATCHISON, Kan. — Benedictine took out much of its frustrations on Culver-Stockton.

Pent-up exasperations accrued in four tough losses this season, the Ravens’ 49-7 victory Saturday over HAAC bottom-feeder Culver-Stockton (0-7, 0-7) evens Benedictine’s record at 4-4 and puts it back in contention to finish with a winning record for the second straight year. The Ravens have a road date with HAAC leader Lindenwood next weekend and close out the season at home against Peru State and Graceland.

The homecoming win in front of a packed Larry Wilcox Stadium saw a little bit of everything.

“I think we’ve executed pretty well the last three or four weeks,” Wilcox said. “That’s why today’s game resulted in the way it did. The guys just executed and did the things they’ve been doing in practice on both sides of the ball and that’s a winning combination.”

The Benedictine defense held the Wildcats to 276 yards and limited quarterback Jacob Harnacke.

“We just wanted to come out and fight today,” defensive end Ryan Hurtado said. “I feel like any time there’s a lot of pressure on the quarterback, you have to give props to the defensive backs. When they tighten up in coverage, it makes it a lot easier to generate a pass rush.”

Hurtado dropped Harnacke in the second quarter and forced a fumble the Ravens recovered. Matysek dove in from a yard out moments later to score his second touchdown.

Defensive end Keith Starr threw down Harnacke twice in the backfield, and linebacker R.J. Nill added a sack of his own. Harnacke finished with 94 yards through the air on eight completions and was picked off three times.

The Ravens defense continued a season-long trend of tightening up in its own territory, as Culver-Stockton had a tough time driving past the Benedictine 40 yard-line.

Benedictine’s passing attack out of the spread produced 242 yards and three touchdowns for quarterback Ryan Kelly, who finished with 211 passing yards in three quarters of play with backups Nick Kammerer and Wyatt Jiru playing the game’s final 15 minutes. Kelly also rushed for Benedictine’s second score of the game.

“Ryan was right on the mark, and the other guys that came in after him threw the ball pretty well,” Wilcox said. “The receivers and the quarterback were in sync and the protection was pretty solid, and they got minimal pressure on our QB.”

Wide receivers Charles Archie, Chris Langley and Conor Walsh caught third-quarter touchdown passes in that order.

Running back Andrew Pucinski had a career day on the ground, racking up 114 yards on eight carries. Fellow back D.J. Matysek scored two touchdowns in the first half.

The Ravens showed the ability to respond after a heartbreaking 29-21 loss at Baker last week.

“I think that shows a lot of character, and that’s something you want to see in a team,” Wilcox said of his squad’s resiliency. “It’s easy to be down after a loss and not rebound. But there’s good leadership and maturity in the squad, and that’s why that happens.”
