Height of insolence
I don’t usually read “Guilty Pleasures,” because, contrary to its attempt to entice, I am not intrigued by its content.
The headline in the Oct. 19 column (“Comedian: End world hunger? Sell the Vatican) piqued my interest enough that I read the story and was incensed with what it said. For one reason, because there is no news value to stories like this. For another, because it is beyond presumption for anyone who belongs to the vast world of entertainment.
To suggest, even in jest, what those in a religious calling, no matter how affluent, should do with their assets, especially in a profanity-laced monologue, is the height of insolence. I would venture a guess that the holdings of every Christian entity in the world do not exceed that of those who live to entertain.
Why is it any more the responsibility of Christianity to feed the world than secular enterprises? Would the entertainment industry, including sports, be willing to sacrifice their stadiums, casinos, theaters, concert halls, palatial homes and all other opulent possessions to provide the wherewithal to produce food?
For the News-Press to print these attempts to polarize the different segments of society is inexcusable.

Last time I checked sports teams, casinos, theaters, concert halls and most people in the world did not make a vow of poverty and preach charity toward others. That is kind of the huge difference.
Ms. Silverman was making a funny because that is what comedians do. Often humor point out the hypocrisy in life for which all human beings are guilty of doing. She was not trying to start a movement to change or expect people to try to do what she asked but was simply a joke.
One might think anyone taking it seriously or gets offended from it might want to look in the mirror and see why. As this person thinks one might be using their beliefs to feel superior towards others and not to try to be just a good person living the way God wants us to. Because there was no attack on the Catholic religion but merely pointing out a hypocrisy for some in it that is amusing to some people.
Well said. Who gives a crap if your offended. I am not religious at all, but everyday have to hear how religious leaders tell Governments what they need to do or can't do. And that effects me. Can't get a helthcare bill passed because the Pope says abortion is wrong. Who gives a crap what the Pope says, I am not catholic.Abortion is wrong, but apparently the 50 0r 60 child molesters you have as priest is ok? You forgave them , so you can forgive me if I live my life without your religion. Don't like it? Don't read it.
rk92559.......you really are a sweetie...........
The reason we can't get a health care bill passed is simple...we have a congress that is totally incompetent and horribly overly political.
They talk about every thing the Government does as poorly run, inefficient, incompetent and ineffective....and usually forget to observe that it all begins with a Congress that is much, much worse than any of the ineffective governmental functions....even the Post Office.
rk - I get it now.
