It's your call, Oct. 29, 2009

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Editor’s note: In keeping with tradition, Saturday is the last day the News-Press will publish comments concerning the school levy on Tuesday’s ballot. Comments received by noon Friday will be considered for publication.

*******

Start walking

I think the gas companies are doing more harm than al-Qaida is to the United States. The last time they said it was a recession. But if they keep going up with this gas, it’s going to be a depression. Nobody can afford to go to work.

*******

The poor poor

It seems like every time you pick up a newspaper or listen to the news, it’s always about the poor, struggling middle class. I can’t help wondering about all the millions of Americans who’ve worked hard all of their life and never achieved middle class. I guess they’re forgotten about completely.

*******

Same story

I read “It’s your call” where somebody had gone out to Wal-Mart and seen somebody with a sign that said they needed help to get home to Nebraska. And whoever it was gave six or seven dollars and the very next day they saw the same person there. So they say fool me once your fault. Fool me twice, my fault. Well, you know that doesn’t mean it’s going to stop. That’s been going for thousands of years — beggars, you know.

*******

God is great

I find it interesting that the Muslims are holding the entire world hostage through fear and intimidation. People are afraid to write about them. People are afraid to even draw a simple cartoon about them. They claim they have a peaceful religion, but I beg to differ with that.

*******

Clear the air

So you’ve got to be kidding me. Maryville is ahead of the curve now with the no smoking. Come on, St. Joseph. I would like to breathe clean, nice, crispy air without an oxygen tank or anything like that. You definitely don’t get it Downtown where I work. But I wouldn’t mind going to a bar and it being smoke-free or, matter of fact, going to any restaurant and not having to inhale other people’s toxins or poisons.

*******

Gas isn’t cheap

Over the weekend at the King City exit on Interstate 29, a man with a sign was standing outside of his car. The sign read, “Out of gas. Anything will help.” Today, Tuesday, he is still there with the sign. Has he not gotten enough money yet to move his car?

These panhandlers with their signs probably make more money than most everyone reading these posts!! Stan Kramer in Kansas City did an investigation about the ones down there...specifically the ones on the 12th Street and Broadway intersection. They have their car parked a few blocks away, and live in a regular house....and they rake in about $45K a year....begging on that corner. The BEST part is....there are no taxes!!!
It's shysters like these folks that make it hard on the ones who really and truly need help. I no longer give to people like that. I give to the United Way, and I put money in the Salvation Army buckets at Christmas. I also give to the benevolent fund at our church. I will NOT give one thin penny to these folks holding their signs......

To 'God is great'

It's not just the Muslims that are violent, there are idiots in every religion that are willing to kill people in the name of "god".

i agree with you pops.

seen a tv show a few years ago they track a man who begged on street corners. in their investigation they found the man was makeing around $100.000 a year. now this was in ny city. i seen the report by stan, and we wonder why theres so much distrust. remenber the pepole on belt bowl parking lot couple years ago. i offered them some work, told them where meet me, imagine no show. so like you pops theres some great charities here in town that put the money to good use, including my church.

haha, that cheeseburger guy always cracks me up. I lived in DC for sometime and actually had a lady pull her car over, while I was walking on the side walk, and ask me for money for gas! I could have given hundreds of dollars away to beggars in DC. Funny, they didn't realize that I didnt hardly have enough money to eat some days but I was at least working for what I did have.

Well, at least I saw an honest one sometime back. His sign said, "I'll be honest, I need a beer". I'd given him one if I'd had one!
