Commons to unveil 2 eateries in March
Mr. Goodcents. King Kong will open on South U.S. 169
by Ahmad Safi
Friday, October 30, 2009

Two new restaurants will open in The Commons shopping development in March — King Kong Fast Food and Mr. Goodcents Subs & Pastas.

King Kong has four locations in Omaha and Lincoln, Neb. The menu includes gourmet hamburgers (its smallest burger is half a pound), Philly steak sandwiches and its drippy gyros (pronounced YEE-ro, Greek for “spin”).

In a gyro, meat is carved off a rotisserie and wrapped in a flatbread with a dollop of yogurt sauce. It has become a Greek restaurant staple in the United States since the mid-1970s. A local franchise group will own and operate King Kong.

“I think King Kong’s will do really well there. I think people like meat and low prices,” said Omaha-based owner Nick Triantafillou. He said another location is planned next year in Independence, Mo. King Kong has Wednesday and Sunday sirloin steak specials.

Mr. Goodcents is owned by business partners Randy Russell and Bart Brant, who own a local freight brokerage and maintenance company. This is their first sandwich shop endeavor.

Mr. Goodcents is expected to open in early March, and King Kong will follow two weeks later.

The development of The Commons, located on South U.S. Highway 169 near Interstate 29, has pioneered several firsts.

“We have the first Menards in Missouri, the first Waffle House in St. Joseph. We’ll have the first King Kong in Missouri, we’ll have the first Mr. Goodcents ever with a drive-thru,” said restaurant developer Jarrett Archdekin.

Mr. Archdekin is president of Earthworks Excavation Co., which developed The Commons. State environmental regulators cited Earthworks in 2005 for polluting area streams at The Commons and at Morningside Estates Subdivision. It paid a $50,000 civil penalty to the Buchanan County School Fund for the violations.
