Editor’s note: In keeping with tradition, this is the last day the News-Press will publish comments concerning the school levy on Tuesday’s ballot. We welcome your calls on other matters.
Unfair, unbalanced
In 2004, there was a shortage of flu vaccine and gas prices were increasing. The media told us this was George Bush’s fault. Now we have a shortage of flu vaccine and the gas prices are increasing. But I haven’t heard or read that this is Obama’s fault. Is this another example of media bias?
Rock on
To “In the swing,” on Saturday at 5 p.m. is Lawrence Welk on Channel 11, and on Saturday and Sunday check the school channels on public cable. They play 1950s music and ’40s and ’60s.
Raise it
I like the idea of the catchphrase “Our Children. Our Future. Our Decision.” But then, in today’s paper what does Janet Pullen say that they’re going to use the money for? Well, some of the recommendations would be we could get salary schedules for teachers. So let’s change that slogan: “Our students. Our future. Our teacher salary raises.”
Priority alert
I just read in the paper that they’re out looking for a homeless woman who did a little bit of cheating on her taxes by claiming her four children. Now, for Pete’s sake, don’t they have someone else to go after? What’s the object in trying to find a homeless woman when there are probably a thousand people in St. Joseph and the surrounding area who have done worse things?
Open your ears
I never thought I would be calling in, defending St. Joseph Cablevision. The person in Wednesday’s “It’s your call” wanted some 1950s music. What more could you want than what is on the Cablevision system? There are 40 music channels. Now I do have a complaint. They took the bluegrass off the music channels.
To "Raise It" - you believe that making sure the teachers who educate our children don't deserve to be paid accordingly? Taking care of our children is making sure the people who teach them are taken care of fairly as well. If you have some teacher who is angry over their salary, and might be in the market for quitting their job over it, the job they do at educating is going to suffer. Thusly, the kids will suffer.
I'm more worried about whether the money they are asking for is going to be spent for things like dinners for the school board or yet another boost for the sports and the rest of the kids see no improvement.
CeCe........one of the problems is that we don't have appropriate recognitin for "good teachers". Lets just face facts...all teachers are not necessarily good. It's the good ones that really do some good and deserve recognition and appropriate pay.
The teachers union is it's own worst enemy....they are fighting for "fairness". Well, paying bad teachers and giving them the same benefits as "good" ones is just plain dumb and will get push back.
If they allowed recognition of achievement.....like we often do in a capitalist world, the whole thing would fall into place.
The problem is that they define "fair" as paying evenone the same.
