Who controls the Guard?

Missouri adjutant general sees limited federal role

Missouri's adjutant general says the National Guard is a governor's best alternative to provide relief for both local and national disasters, and downplayed the need to have those troops under federal control.

Recent Associated Press stories report that the Pentagon is upsetting the nation's governors by pushing for authority to call up military reservists for natural disasters - and to control how the troops would be used in any state.

"The Missouri National Guard is the governor's best foundation for effective and efficient relief in dealing with local disasters," said Brig. Gen. Steve Danner, the state's commander of the National Guard. "The guard has shown time and again that active assistance to local authorities can provide immediate and effective relief."

In most past emergencies, there has been no need to call out federal troops, Mr. Danner said. With agreements between states, additional members of the National Guard are available to report to a governor to handle relief efforts.

"I don't foresee, whether the New Madrid fault creates an earthquake or some other major natural disaster, any need for anyone except National Guard troops," the general said.

During Hurricane Katrina, various governors deployed 58,000 Guardsmen to assist. Within 72 hours, Missouri had 2,400 troops on the ground, reporting to Louisiana's governor. Some 1,200 federal troops were called in to deal with federal sites, but there was no command structure for them to provide direct assistance to that governor's problems after Katrina.

Annual weather-related events continue to provide a variety of training opportunities for Missouri National Guard soldiers and airmen to improve their disaster response capabilities, Mr. Danner said.

There is one area where Missouri's adjutant general does foresee a federal role. Depending on the disaster, Mr. Danner said Guardsmen may need federal equipment and other assets, such as a staging area, on a federal reservation.

The Pentagon has it's eye on the Posse Comitatus Act. This is the latest move by a string of administrations that think laws and the Constituion only apply to them when it is convenient. They cite the debacle of Hurricane Katrina as a justification for this when in fact the the problems where caused by local incompetence and just plain circumstance. The states need to band together to wrest power away from the Federal Government, not give them more.

The governors should act prudently in removing any doubt that they will allow federal control.

There will be a coordinated crisis that will soon test the governors' stance. This power grab is unprecedented, not in the hunger for power, but in the pace in which power is being granted.

I've often wondered if the FEMA detention centers will be used to house the H1N1 infected - because they're certainly not being used to house illegal immigrants as was told to us during and after their construction. Now the Pentagon wants even more control, huh?

If you trust your government 100% there is no cause for alarm (or the Constitution for that matter). If you have even a shred of doubt they have and will continue to lie to us, then vigilance is key.

Just as the states governors will be tested, so too will the American people. There is a sleeping dragon among us, only I believe that it hasn't been woken yet - the people, not the government are what make up the extremely patriotic and willful reputation that we have enjoyed.

Now it is time to prove it. When the feds come knocking, it is of the utmost importance they know where we stand. Let there be no confusion, we are a land of the people, by the people and for the people - and we will all resist and destroy any external or internal invaders who seek to do us harm in the name of, "the greater good."

"since when did our gov. try and take away anything that belonged to you?"

During the aftermath of Katrina, the government systematically disarmed the populace at the very time social order had broken down and the citizens most needed firearms for self protection. That is the most egregious example that comes to mind, there are many others if you would like me to cite them. If you care to Google "civil asset forfeiture abuse" you would be shocked at what the government has taken from people. It is real, Donald. It is here. Just because it hasn't happened to you YET does not mean it doesn't happen.

Now that that is out of the way, if you prefer to publicize your ignorance on the subject, the local government of New Orleans called for the disarmament of the people of New Orleans. Read here...

Once again, you're completely entitled to believe anything you want to believe. If anything, if you are so adamant that we are spewing misinformation - prove me wrong. Take five minutes out of your morning and prove me wrong. You've wasted at least ten minutes calling us names, spend five to prove yourself right. My guess is we will not see you comment further in this discussion or you will make some sarcastic, flippant remark and move on, never actually addressing anything.

Why do you think I cringe where I hear, "our national guard wouldn't do that, they are made up of people just like me and you."

Oh yeah! You think? Because we have seen over and over that they are just like us huh? Except they have automatic rifles, explosives, training and are required to FOLLOW orders, not question them. Tell me which part in that description sounds like an average American?

Don't be a fool - it's happened before and it will happen again it's only a question of when.

I've said it before and I will say it again - the US government doesn't need to worry about me, I can take care of myself. If government agents or soldiers start coming around to disarm the people of this city I can assure you I will not be answering my door. If ANYONE tries to enter my home without my permission they will meet the business end of a Mossberg 500 .12ga. and more slugs than I can count.

Don't even bother knocking - keep on moving and if I hear my neighbors screaming for help I will help them. There is no doubt in my mind a crisis is about to unfold that will allow them to usher in their controlling policies such as Bushs' NSPD51.

No one is asking anyone to be paranoid, just simply stay vigilant. Our forefathers warned us for a reason, not because they didn't have anything better to do.

Live free or die.

Donaldo - you make it too easy...

Republicans were in office during the two incidents I've outlined for you above. Further proof that this is not a right v. left thing. This is not republican v. democrat.

This is a government v. its people thing and you better damn well make the distinction or you will suffer from your ignorance.

Who's paranoid? Certainly not me - I live my life the best I can each and every day. By your own admission I smell those flowers more often because I view my time here as precious and not guaranteed - it is because of that very fact that I take every opportunity to enjoy my surroundings as well as those I surround myself with.

Donaldo you must be part French. Only a Frenchman of the 18th century would talk of things as you do. Our forefathers knew exactly what would happen if we got carried away with individuality and grew complacent in those we entrust with great power. Am I to believe Thomas Jefferson was paranoid? How about Benjamin Franklin? More paranoid-types? The only difference between my comments and theirs is the words I use, not the meaning of the whole.

There is nothing more sad, as you put it, than an American who feels no responsibility to maintain their government. I am to assume you're one of those people who only gets politically involved every four years and then pretends as if you have any clout in the political conversation to begin with by invoking, "if you didn't vote you have no right to complain."

It's because of people like you that we find ourselves in an electoral college system - the population is too stupid or cares too little to be trusted in matters involving our political or social affairs. It can be argued that was the first sign that this country was heading for trouble; they became so comfortable with their lives they couldn't be bothered to involve themselves in matters of politics, as if it didn't affect them.

WW, give it up. If you'd like to have conversation, I'm all for it but I'm tired of your drive-by one-liners in your endless game of tying me to idiots. Van Jones was a joke and will be used to "prove" that the administration means "transparency" when they said it. He was and is a scapegoat to once again make it appear as if Washington is doing something for the good.

In fact, WW, I'm going to tell this story once again. When I first began to read your comments I offered my friendship and a warm cup of coffee for your conversation. I have tried to write you off many times but I have this nagging feeling that we would probably agree on more than we both would realize.

Finally, there is nothing interesting about my comment on paranoia. It's simple - no one is asking to be paranoid, only to remain vigilant. Not to act like everyone is out to get you, only to acknowledge that there are those who would do us harm.

Let us make that distinction by their actions as their words have lost all credibility.

By their deeds you shall know them.

Donald, you have asked some questions, here are some answers.

Republican propaganda. Nope, the R's would prefer no one know about this, it is a black eye for freedom.

Was I in NOLA? No, but I have talked to some people that were and they relayed the stories firsthand. It is well documented.

Is this something you read? Yes, I read about it, have seen videos about it. I actually took the time to read the injunction filed against the City of New Orleans. Case 2:05-cv-04234-CJB-JCW Look it up, it is interesting reading.

When did we seceded from the union? We seceded on Oct 30, 1861 at the Neosho Conferene. The secession leaders were subsequently arrested and the secession documents destroyed by the Union Army. Why do you think this was a strictly Democrat state for more than a century? It is because of how badly the state suffered under Republican federal rule during the "War of Northern Aggression". Google "The Burnt District".

Who said my name was Donald? You did, Mr. Griswold.

As to your ad hominem attacks. I am well read, well informed, and independent of mind. It is not my fault you are not supple of mind. I realize it makes life easier for you, but in the end it is a single plane existence.

theres a lot of political folks in power today who belive the law does'nt refer to them. seems they have lost sight of why they were elected in the first place. the guard was formed for the states in times of emergencys. it should'nt be given control to the federal gov. it should be the governors who control them. they have a much better understanding of whats needed in their states when disastor strikes.

if you don't belive they will come in the middle of the night to take your guns your kidding yourself.

i recall ruby ridge, they set an american citizen up for selling a sawed off shotgun, because he refused to be an informant. was that worth the mans wife and child. don't tell me his shot was an accident. he knew full well what he was shooting at. with his equipment he can count the hairs on a gnats you knonw what at 300meters. i know,i own a simular rifle and optics.

i belive the gov. paid several million dollars for that screw up.

This may be something the pentagon would like, but it ain't gonna happen. There is no support in congress for this so far, probably never will be.
I believe the president already has the authority to nationalize the state guard to enforce federal law. Eisenhower did it in the 1957.

Give Donald a break, him just learned 'bout apostrophes.

Donald, in all seriousness, why do you insist on degrading a conversation or debate into drivel when you have nothing better to say?

Have you ever heard,

"Better to be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt?"

I find it most interesting that more than one person can inundate you with fact after fact that documents your ignorance on the subject to no avail. Liars and thieves often act in the same fashion...

Deny, deny and deny. When caught, deny some more.

If you demand facts for conversation, why ignore them when they are presented to you? Myself and others take the time to GIVE you this information upon request - but then you can't be bothered to discuss it as an adult?

So I beg of you - if you can't acknowledge the truth when it is GIVEN to you, why do you bother discussing it at all?
