Bad manners don't end political careers
by Ken Newton
Thursday, September 10, 2009

Word spread on Thursday morning that the political opponent of Rep. Joe Wilson raised big money immediately after the South Carolina congressman heckled President Obama in the U.S. House chamber.

The Republican lawmaker shouted "You lie" at the president during Mr. Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress Wednesday night. Mr. Wilson took exception to a claim that the health-care reform bill would not cover illegal immigrants.

(As geographical reference and context on lying, Mr. Wilson resides in the state where his party's leader, Gov. Mark Sanford, claimed to be hiking the Appalachian Trail when actually meeting his mistress in Argentina.)

After the speech, Mr. Wilson issued an apology. "This evening I let my emotions get the best of me," he said in a statement. The apology probably appeased no one. Democrats mock the congressman for letting emotions guide his leadership, while Republicans probably regard his immediate apology as softness.

For all that, don't expect the breach of congressional decorum to mark an automatic end to Mr. Wilson's political career. Remember that a Missouri state representative heckled Gov. Bob Holden during his State of the State speech in January 2004. One year later, the heckler, Rod Jetton, became speaker of the Missouri House.

If boorishness were a career killer, more politicians would fall.

Let's face it, we lose control of ourselves when our intelligence is repeatedly and grossly insulted. Joe Wilson's outburst was an involuntary reaction to an insult he couldn't tolerate. Look for others to take courage and follow his example of insisting on truth. He had inside information, gained from his position on a Congressional Committee ,that Democrats have no intention of excluding illegal aliens from accessing our health care system. They are already permiitted to do so in California. They can't speak a word of English, and sometimes not Spanish either, but they walk right into clinics and get whatever treatment and medications are necessary. Such humanitarianism is just part of the burden illegal immigrants place on the California economy , which is, by the way, hopelessly bankrupt .

Easy fix, make every business that employs illegals pay big enough fines to deter others from doing the same thing. Those penalties, if large enough, would help the states finances.

I think every stat should be held accountable for publishing how much money is paid out for medical treatment for illegals! I know Az has very big bills when a 12 passenger van with 30 people in it rolls. They have to air lift 2-10 people then the long term care afterward is high. Guess who pays for that. Besides the money spend to print everthing in spanish as they do not understand English. Oh yes if you look up food stamps it states illegals can get food stamps. Who pays for that??

Rep. Wilson is a DISGRACE to the institution and people he was elected to serve and deserves to be formally sanctioned.
Based on how this matter developed it could be argued that the outburst of Rep. Wilson was not just a spontaneous act of emotion but rather a calculated plan to gain media attention.
I fully embrace the principle that every individual has the right for their position to be heard and that debate on all matters is healthy to the process. When we as a people accept the type of conduct like that displayed by Rep. Wilson, we are taking yet another step in diminishing a level of civility essential in maintaining the orderly process of governing.

I think it ridiculous that Rep Wilson is even getting this kind of attention. I think it is just another situation of diversion from the real issues at stake by a government that is not listening and wants to take this country away from conservatism.
The real news is ACORN and its continuing corruption and relationship to the White House. ACORN, under the stimulus package, is going to get almost 8 billion of our tax money. ACORN is a nasty piece of work and is protected by the current administration. Heads will only roll in organizations like this when their own words convict them and the White House, ACORN leaders, and Congressmen cannot deny proof. Proof of that is in the Van Jones debaucle...but of course Obama didn't force him out! What a joke! He, like ACORN, tried to deny allegations against him. But when faced with HIS OWN TAPED WORDS and SIGNATURE on the Truther document, he had to leave. He should have never been allowed in the first place.
Our health care does need reforming but if it is government run, it will be worse for us all in the long run. We will pay more for less and there will be more corruption and waste. There are lots of good ideas that make good commen sense if everyone would worry more about what needs to be fixed than in getting re-elected. BTW, forcing people to buy what they can't afford does not make sense.
Illegals should NOT be allowed to take part in any of our country's politics. Either make them legal or get them out!!! I grew up with many Mexicans and Cubans and the ones who are here legally do not like the illegals being here either...so RACE has NOTHING to do with it! It has everything to do with ignoring our country's laws and the politicians who do the same. What good is it to have laws and ignore them?
FYI, I used to be more liberal..I had no problem with abortion, illegals, or the Clinton era....but I grew up and had to start paying my own bills and had children...interesting how that matures a persons outlook.

Why can obama in every speech disrespect Pres Bush and it is alright but demands RESPECT FOR HIMSELF?? Leave his wife and children alone but use every opportunity to take a swipe at Gov Palin?? Does he not realize when he points the finger at someone he has 3 pointing right back at himself? He gets the same respect he gives.

If he is so passionate about Illegals..where has he been while 15 million of them came into our country and no attempts to send them back or keep them from coming here to begin with? How about he introduces a bill to create jobs..like INS agents to find these people and expell them from the country? The only thing this idiot had to offer about healthcare is this outburst.I can hear it now from the Blue cross board room. "Is this guy on our payroll?? If not..send that man some money!!I am sick of the money grabs and bribes we allow our elected officials to accept. Both sides have reaped millions from that clown show the other night. The whole thing looked like a bad Jerry Springer show. And this idiot is on his website asking for donations from followers like some tele-evangelist.

What has any of these idiots done? Obama?..Nothing. Hilary Clinton? Nuff said..her husband is the reason we have 15 million illegals and all our jobs in Mexico. Nancy Pelosi makes me want to vomit. Her home State is broke and she is in a position to decide on my future?? And that goes for the Republicans as well. None of them have done anything but drive this country into the ground. If this country recovers..it will be in spite of those bozos, not because of them.

rk - My views on illegals and immigration I assure you are at least or perhaps in some ways more conservative than yours. But as an independent I must agree both parties hold equal responsibility in not correcting the problem.
I also believe the number you have quoted is much different than what realy exist.

http://www.theamericanresistance.com/ref/illegal_alien_numbers.html

You can review the methodology for yourself.

Since January 2009 the number of illegals entering the country is estimated at 2.5 million. The total number in the country is put at over 40 million.

My point; we had a Republican President for 8 years along with both houses controlled by the Republicans during the majority of that same time. What was accomplished, nothing. Now the Democrats are in control and they display the same inaction and ineffectiveness.

This is an issue that is not going to simply resolve itself with time. Both parties have failed miserably for over a decade in making the hard decisions needed to end the problem. As this relates to the healthcare debate I see it as a positive. Everyone knows we are not going to let a person die at the door of a hospital because they are an illegal alien but there are options of what can take place afterward with any individual in the country illegally.

And they and you know that figure is correct? How? Do they check in with someone to let them know they are here illegally?? Nope, has nothing to do with turning away someone with life threatening injuries because they are illegal. But see...the term illegal..well..means they are breaking our law. Fix them up at the hospital and send them directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect welfare. I have seen one example of an illegal that murdered someone. The local police dept said he didn't have a violent past..just several traffic violations. Hmmm..you pulled him over and found he was illegal...and just wrote him a ticket and let him go?? TWICE??? That is how much anyone cares about a huge problem.

And local National Guard units get sent to the blakans for a year. To hell with the balkans, if your going to send them somewhere, send them to our southern border and instruct them to shoot to kill anyone that is sneaking into our country. We have every right to do that.

I think people are just sick and tired of Obama and his ilk just out and out lying to our faces. It is about time someone called him out. Obama claims that he is going to call other people out so why can't he be called out when he is flat out lying to the American people. I just wish they had done a better job bringing out the true Obama before the election.

SJM - A bit of time on the nonpartisan factcheck site versus accepting that from the ideology spinners might provide a much different perspective.
