Salesman opens season

Theatre Atchison is proud to bring Meredith Willson's "The Music Man" to its stage as the 2009-2010 season opener. This Broadway classic follows a fast-talking traveling salesman as he plans to con a small town into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band and flee with their cash.

Performances of "The Music Man" are at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Sept 18, 19, 25 and 26 and at 2 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 20 and 27. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students. Call Theatre Atchison's box office at (913) 367-7469 for reservations.

Accepting artwork

The Allied Arts Council is accepting artwork from Oct. 12 through 26 for its fall "Art for the Health of It" exhibit. Entries must be received in the Allied Arts Council office, 118 S. Eighth St., by 5 p.m. Oct. 26. The exhibit will run from Nov. 3 through Jan. 4 at the East Hills Library, with student work displayed at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of three jurors in the following categories: painting, drawing, photo and other media. A cash prize of $100 will be awarded in each category, and winners will be featured in a future "Art for Business' Sake" exhibit. A $25 cash prize will be awarded to the best high school student entry.

Entry forms are available at the Allied Arts Council office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The entry fee is $15 per piece, with no entry fee for high school students. A reception for artists and friends will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at East Hills Library, 502 N. Woodbine. Call the Allied Arts Council at 233-0231 for further information.

A fine wine experience

The Performing Arts Association will hold a scenic wine tour from 1:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 26. Guests will meet at Luna's Fine Dining at 20th and Jules and will board a motorcoach to visit Pirtle's Winery in Weston, Mo., and Riverwood Winery in Rushville, Mo. The tour is $65 per person.
