TITLE: “The Jury Is Out” (Slow Turn Records)
ARTIST: The Eric Muhler Quartet
STARS: 4 Out Of 5 Stars
SOUNDS LIKE: Creative and laid back fusion jazz somewhat reminiscent of the Yellowjackets
“The Jury Is Out” is pianist Eric Muhler’s fifth album and for someone so talented and creative it’s surprising he isn’t more widely known. His compositions are creatively executed and layered, subtly weaving together jazz, R & B and classical music. Most of the songs might be a little too involved for much airplay but that makes them no less accessible on a smooth jazz level. But make no mistake, this isn’t smooth jazz by any means.
Sometimes is almost pensively atmospheric like the exquisite “Alexandra Cristina A.M.” Other times it straight out jamming like the bebop influenced title tune.
It’s easy to get enveloped in this music. It’s so seamlessly constructed you almost forget it’s a recording of a live date by the group. While crowd noises and introductions usually enhance live recordings for some reason they don’t work here. Instead, they break the musical trance.
Simply put this is intelligent, enjoyable music by a talented musician who deserves wider recognition. Highly recommended.
