If you are a reality TV fiend or a purveyor of pop culture, you've probably heard the music of Minneapolis indie rockers the Readygoes and not even known it.
Example: Some scene where a girl from MTV's "The Hills" is walking down a Hollywood street before she has an "unexpected encounter" with her friend/enemy. The energetic indie rock that served as the soundtrack to her twenty-something strut - that was the Readygoes.
Actually, that was initially the music created by drummer Tyler Jorenby and singer Bryan Shackle in 2007. They wrote anonymous indie rock tunes they sold to a music licensing company. Those songs were then used as background music for shows like "The Hills," the MTV dating show "Next" and the short-lived E! reality show "Living Lohan."
"They wanted to add more of sort of an indie rock kind of sound to their catalog," Jorenby says. "Every time that happens, we get a few cents in our pocket."
But Jorenby and Shackle weren't just content with being in the background. They really dug the songs they were creating and wanted to play them live. So, after recruiting guitarist Patrick Gibbs, bassist George Hadfield and an additional guitarist who simply goes by "Mo," the Readygoes were, well, ready to go.
While a lot of the songs Jorenby and Shackle initially wrote together serve as Readygoes tracks, they quickly got re-imagined with three more musicians in the mix. Dual guitarists delivered a raucous rock edge, Hadfield helped the band find its The Killers-esque dance grooves and well-placed synthesizers, harmonies and vocal effects injected some New Wave polish.
"The things they did and the things that they added onto the song made it sound a little more exciting," Jorenby says. "You get the mess and you get the finesse."
It all seems to be working in their favor, as is evidenced in their video for the anthemic single "Hey Oh" getting primo placement at the end of "E! News" in 2008 and later on Fuse's "Unsigned On Demand" in 2009.
The Readygoes will share the stage with Holy Mother Exhause at 10 p.m. Sept. 19 at The Rendezvous. Cover is $3. Jimmy Green, owner of The Rendezvous, knew he heard something promising in the audibly tight quintet.
"It's kind of refreshing, actually. It's really some interesting stuff," Green says. "They've got something working here and if they stay with it, something's going to happen."
But before it does, when the boys of the Readygoes get an opportunity to showcase their sound, on TV or at a local dive, they have big success in their sights.
"Every time we get an opportunity ... it definitely adds fuel to the fire that we really want to make it work," Jorenby says.
