John Patitucci - "Remembrance"
Eleven straight ahead to funky classical tinged originals.

Monday, September 21, 2009

TITLE: Remembrance (Concord Jazz)

ARTIST: The John Patitucci Trio

STARS: 4 1/2 out Of 5 Stars

SOUNDS LIKE: Minimalist and moody jazz

Bassist John Patitucci is know mostly for his speed, dexterity and funk rock sensibility on bass. On “Remembrance” the talented bassist takes a stripped down minimalist approach, accompanied only by drummer Brian Blade and saxophonist Joe Lovano on most all of the 11 tracks.

The smoky Messaien’s Gumbo” has an almost 1950s coffee house feel to it with Lovano’s hip sax providing the beat poetry.

“Scenes form An Opera” is a cinematic excursion with a delicate conversation between Patitucci bass and his wife Sachi’s lilting cello.

Almost every tune on the “Remembrance” is dedicated to a musician who influenced Patitucci in some way.

“Sonny Side,” a tribute to sax colossus Sonny Rollins, has the same tropical feel as his masterpiece “St. Thomas.”

“Monk/Trane” a tribute to John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk plays around with the chord changes from Coltrane’s classic “Giant Steps.”

“Remembrance” is understated elegance painted with a smoky night club patina.
