So I was pretty impressed to hear that Orscheln Farm & Home collected 3.7 million pounds of batteries to be recycled into new batteries. The company held their first battery exchange recently at all 152 Orschelin locations in nine states.

Even utility companies can’t hide from the gloomy economy. Great Plains Energy, the parent company of Kansas City Power & Light, is cutting dividends and reducing the earnings guide for 2009. The company blames lower demand for electricity and higher financing costs for the decision.

A story in Sunday’s paper about how foreclosure has affected a family so close to Christmas has resulted in a community outpouring. I received dozens of e-mails and phone calls come Monday morning. “We want to help” they all stated. From monetary donations to get the family caught up on mortgage payments to food and presents for the four children for Christmas.

Regulators sue JBS, National Beef over deal

Regulators filed a lawsuit Monday to block the world's largest beef processor from buying the nation's fourth-largest operation, saying such a deal could push up beef prices for consumers and drive down prices paid to ranchers and feedlots. The Department of Justice and attorneys general for 13 states filed the suit against Brazilian beef producer JBS S.A. and National Beef Packing Co. of Kansas City, Mo.
