If you love watching sports, Carson’s is your kind of place. With 23 TVs, including one enormous 8-foot-by-10-foot screen on the wall, you won’t miss any action.
Eats: Pizza RoyalPizza Royal’s trademark is their thin, cracker-crust pizza with homemade sauce and lots of toppings. It’s not like anything you’ll find at the chain pizza places. Neither is the decor.
MoJo CafeMichael Lieffring and his mother, Sue, opened MoJo Cafe about five weeks ago in downtown St. Joseph. Although the previous tenants changed so much it gave fast food a new meaning, Michael says they hope to have better luck by offering larger portions and lower prices.
First Ward HouseBuilt in 1878, the First Ward House claims to be the oldest saloon west of the Mississippi, a former brothel, and a hangout for the infamous Bonnie and Clyde. And now you can add home of Pinzino’s Smokehouse, since Chad Pinzino took over ownership a few months ago. Charlie Pinzino, of the long-standing, but now gone, Pinzino’s Meat Market in St. Joseph, is his grandfather
Forest City DinerThe Forest City Diner is the epitome of the mom-and-pop restaurants that used to be scattered all over the Midwest. The young owners, Andrea and Bradley Sisk, have been running the place for only two years, but they have kept it pretty much like it has been for ages, with genuine retro chrome tables and stools, serving unpretentious Midwest comfort food.
Napoli’s Italian RestaurantIt’s not often you hear authentic Italian accents in northwest Missouri. But that’s what you’ll hear at Napoli’s Italian Restaurant in Maryville, Mo.
Bujar (B. J.) Rexha, a native of Venice, opened the restaurant with his cousin in early 2008 and runs it with the help of his extended family. The family has been in the restaurant business for 20 years, Rexha says. Napoli’s is one of a chain of restaurants the family owns
As of April 15, the last coat of paint was going on Sammy and Casey’s, a new addition to Geneo’s Pizza and Pub in downtown St. Joseph. The addition makes an interesting three-in-one setup: the restaurant in the middle, a quiet bar on the right and Sammy and Casey’s on the left. They are all connected on the inside, but have separate entrances.
P. J.’s PlacePaul Williams and his wife, Janis, opened up P.J.’s Place about five months ago. It’s one of those long-time, dream-come-true stories for Paul, who previously cooked at Cascone’s in Kansas City, the Holiday Inn and Ramada Inn, among others.
Cordonnier’s PlaceCordonnier’s Place is one of St. Joseph’s long-standing hangouts for food and drink. It’s located off the Stockyards Expressway along with some other well known watering holes, Hap’s Place and Mackenzie’s Bar & Grill.
As far as the food goes, you can ask a local off the street and they will tell you Cordonnier’s is the place to go for catfish. (Seriously, when I was lost on the other side of town, a kind woman in her yard didn’t know the address, but knew it was the place for catfish.) A News-Press reader also recommended the carp for our Best Bite. In addition, their hand-cut tenderloin is very popular for lunch and dinner.
Cedar Creek is a renovated barn turned restaurant that is only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Magoon’s Famous DelicatessenMagoon’s is a unique New York deli-style bar with a comfy old-time neighborhood feel.
Inside Magoon’s, with the red booths, tile floors and nostalgic St. Joseph memorabilia, it’s easy to imagine what it may have looked like originally when Ben Magoon opened the business in 1930. He closed it in 1980, but Barry Woodhall reopened the deli one year ago (Jan. 26, 2007) with the blessings and some of the original recipes of the Magoon family.
First Ward House on St. Joseph Ave is more than just a bar or restaurant. Built in 1878, it’s the oldest saloon west of the Mississippi.
It was named First Ward because it was on the border of the first ward voting district, says Bill Beasley Jr. His father, Bill Beasley Sr. has owned the building since 1998.
The Short Stop Bar and Grill in Clarksdale, Mo., is starting the new year with new management and food on the menu.
CheddarsWhen Cheddars first opened in St. Joseph last year, there were lines of people out the door to get in. That can still be the case if you come during the lunch hour or on Friday and Saturday night. The restaurant doesn't take reservations, but it also may be because Cheddars fills a niche in town.
