What We Learned -- Week 3

Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009

As any NFL fan knows, a little parity goes a long way.
Perennial doormats can buck history for a run to the Super Bowl. Traditional powerhouses miss out on the postseason. Despite their detractors, parity and competitive balance keep more teams (and the fan bases that follow) involved much longer into the season, and in the end, nearly everyone wins. Well, maybe unless you’re an Oakland fan.

PICK ’EM BLOG: Week 3

Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009

Well, it was bound to happen.
Eventually my arrogance and trash talk would catch up to me. I’ve been doing it ever since I battered Andy in Pick ’em from the time we started last year, and rightfully, I attempted to beat Andy’s self-worth into hibernation.

Podcast: What We Learned - Week 2

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009

Sometimes in this business, I start to think I’ve got a pretty good grasp on what’s going on. I speak with coaches and players, look at lots of numbers and get a fairly good idea of what should transpire on a week-to-week basis.
It’s always fun to figure out just how much we don’t know once the teams actually take the field.

Six measly points. The equivalent of a couple field goals. That’s nothing, right?

PREP FOOTBALL: Week 1 Wonders

Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009

Ross takes a quick look back at some of the unheralded performers from the first week of football around the Midland Empire.

GAME BLOG: Winnetonka 14, Central 7

Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009

A bizarre first-quarter situation became ost in the late-game drama at Noyes Field.
While seeking a tying score late against the Griffins, a nullified touchdown still stood out in the Indians' season-opening loss. Central didn't tally a tying score in the fourth quarter but saw one wiped away in the first.
Down 6-0 after Darrell Jobe's 75-yard touchdown run on the game's second play, Central appeared to have it tied up and in position to take a one-point lead 10 minutes later.
Here's how it happened:

PICK ‘EM BLOG: Week 1

Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009

The Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association released its preseason poll this week. Mosports.com also finished up its top 10 with plenty of time for fans to peruse the rankings.

GAME BLOG: City Football Jamboree

Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009

The next wave of St. Joseph quarterbacks showcased their diverse skill sets Friday night at the City Football Jamboree.
A few fresh faces lined up under center for each of the city’s four 11-man schools, and each starting quarterback drew mixed reviews based on his respective preseason performance.

THE BELL LAP: District dispatches from Mound City

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

For as long as they’ve competed against each other, you’d think that Cole Rosier and Kyler Hiatt would have developed a full-blown rivalry by now.

The two seniors played vital roles in the area’s best 8-man contests — Mound City versus Worth County — throughout the prep careers and remember running the hurdles against each other in seventh grade. As much as I’d like to believe the pair are sworn enemies who constantly seek revenge against the other, the inverse proves true in this case.

In an otherwise non-descript game, I witnessed my first ever crime-related delay during a high school event.

LeBlond’s Vertin still spry at 61

LeBlond’s Vertin still spry at 61
Steve Vertin didn’t want to talk timelines Tuesday afternoon, shortly after Bishop LeBlond named him its next head football coach.
At 61, talk of retirement and how many years are left in the tank shouldn’t seem out of the question.

THE BELL LAP: End of the backstretch

Friday, May 1, 2009

If you compared the entire season to a lap around the track, we’d be on the final strides of the backstretch right now, getting ready to round the corner.
The front runners already set the pace and established themselves as contenders in the early going, but there’s still enough time for some late surprises along the way.
I’ve seen a ton of track the past two weeks. Good track at that. As we enter the thick of conference season, I thought I’d take a couple moments to recap some of the best subplots and goings-on from around the area.

GAME BLOGS: Pony Express Tournament, Day 1

Monday, April 20, 2009

I only saw the action at Phil Welch Stadium on Monday, but it didn’t leave me with a shortage of things to write about.
After seeing Savannah and Benton score 29 runs on 24 hits in Round 1 victories and Bishop LeBlond and Maryville commit 14 errors in the losses, let’s get to some of the odd baseball witnessed at slowly-rounding-into-shape Phil Welch Stadium.

GAME BLOG: Benton baseball 7, Savannah 5

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

Savannah might have missed an opportunity in the top of the sixth inning, or Benton’s defense simply made another play to win.
It just depends on how you look at it.
