Blaming

Main Street

I am a citizen of St. Joseph, Mo., and I have bought several residences around St. Joseph. And I can’t see how the mortgage bailout to this $700 billion could possibly be on foreclosed properties. Because every time you buy a property you have to put a deposit or so much down. And then when you live in it for five to 10 years and you do lose your job and it does go for foreclosure, they still resell the property and you have been paying interest on the loan for so many years. And I just don’t see how they’re blaming the poor, middle-class guys for losing the properties.

Risk and

responsibility

We continue to hear about the fault of the banks and the finance companies. What about the responsibilities of people who bought houses they can never afford to pay for and ran up thousands of dollars of credit card debt? No one has ever forced you to buy. If people lived within their means, they would not be in this predicament.

Spanish

tomorrow

The message behind Missouri’s English-language ballot initiative is that the majority makes the rules and the majority speaks English. That’s fine for now, but does the majority understand the demographic shift occurring in this country? Do they know that it is inevitable Hispanics will be a majority in California, Texas and other states this century? Are you ready for the new majority, which you are alienating today, to impose Spanish as an official language in those states tomorrow? Demographics is destiny.

Tough questions

I would like readers of this paper to remember as they watch the vice presidential debate that Gwen Ifill of PBS, who will be the moderator, has a financial stake in Obama winning the presidency. She has a book coming out in support of Obama. That is not an impartial moderator.

Friends and foes

Let’s get this story straight. Graves and the Republicans were all for this bailout — in fact it was their idea. So the Dems in charge rewrote it to make financial institutions accountable. But the Republicans wanted to hand out a free check so they voted against it. And because they know that most of us were against it from the start they now claim their vote was because it was too expensive.

Editor’s note: It is true that the bailout plan had Republican support, starting with President Bush and the treasury secretary. However, Sam Graves’ public comments have been in opposition to the plan. He voted against it on Monday.

Blaming Main Street- When all this started happening lenders were offering 0 money down on home loans left and right. People were buying homes with no money down and roling their closing costs into the loan, I did this myself, I walked in with only an ink pen and closed on my house. Big difference, I had a fixed rate a lot of people opted for the ARM and a lower rate with came back in 3 years and bit them you know where.

Some people are not just responsible enough to own a house or have a mortgage.

Risk and responsibility - True what you said, some (alot)people do buy things not in their means, but you have to also acknowledge as well many predatory lenders out there that would tell people anything, mislead, preapprove you for more than in reality you could afford, hide facts to get the loan commission. They even presented false documentations to the lenders in some cases. In addition, they would have their *special* home appraiser that would inflate the home values unknowingly to the home buyer, to get it to look good on paper. They routinely handed out ARM rates to people purposely steering them away from fixed rates and into subprime loans, just so they know they could count on your business 2-3 years down the road, then they try to do it again and again until finally the homeowners either wise up or lose their home. Alot of predatory lenders would only utilize a couple of lenders that they would get the biggest kickback personally, whether or not it was the best lender/rate for the buyer. While homeowners have a responsibility to know what they are getting into, this is not the average homeowners area of expertise, they go to these people, mortgage brokers, real estate agents and pay for their expertise, but instead got a predatory shyster...even here in St. Joe! There is plenty of blame to go around!

Tough Questions--

This "revelation" is just another move by the McCain campaign to have an excuse if Palin performs poorly tonight.

The Ifill book has been talked about for months now. It was written up in the Washington Post and she gave an interview about it just last month. Also, the book has been on pre-order on the on-line booksellers. All of this was known before the McCain campaign agreed to use her as moderator.

If the McCain group didn't bother to even Google Ifill(and given the little vetting the did of Palin, it wouldn't surprise me) they have no one to blame but themselves.

Regardless, Ifill is one of the most respected and fair journalists around. She will do an excellent job.

So Nerd, my question is what else was wrong with the bill that he voted it down, I doubted that it was because he didn't want to have these services available...there must be more to it, something not right with it that he didn't want to agree to. Maybe how it was to be allocated, or where the money was coming from, other little hidden things included in with this bill he was against perhaps? I wouldn't automatically assume that he is against this. Any other info? McCain isn't the type to ditch the veterans and besides alot of veterans are for him, they wouldn't be if doesn't have a history of looking out for them.

risk and responsibility

what you say may be true, but what about those who had no choice, that lost their jobs because companies shut down. this town has lost quite a few good paying jobs, and those people that had the financial obligation of a house payment, had no choice in the matter. if i lost my job right now and couldn't find another that pays at least close to the same, i would also lose my house. i don't live beyond my means.

How much pork barrel was attached to this bill?? MAYBE that is what he voted against!!!!!

Posted by pops on October 2, 2008 at 12:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I wonder if those Obama supporters who are SO supportive of Ms. Ifill's role as moderator of the VP debates would be so supportive if, for instance, the moderator was to be Sean Hannity?? I noticed at least one response above that was basically accusing the McCain campaign of using this choice of moderator as an "excuse" in case Gov. Palin did "poorly". Personally, I think she can well hold her own against any debate opponent, and I'm positive she has nothing to worry about against Sen. Biden. Considering his track record for lengthy gab, the only question will be if she has an opportunity to get a word in edgewise.

rxyrch- Agree, most people would fit in this category, and too people have unexpected health problems creep up, etc. Although I do think this crisis is a direct result of the type of lending practices I mentioned in my first post. There should have been someone watching, cracking down on these predatory lenders long before this happened. Heck business was so good for one local mortgage broker, they created false or stolen identifications, false properties, and committed fraud and guess what, this was the person WE used for our mtg. These cheaters cost me so much money, it makes me nauseated just talking about it. I could probably have sued them and won. Fortunately, we realized what was going on and was able to recover and come out with a right nice loan with a bank, a REAL bank with a low FIXED rate...the one we should have gotten to begin with! So while I count my blessings, others weren't so fortunate. Of course, I still have to mention that there are people out there like the caller stated that live beyond their means, etc.

I miss them too nerd.

I miss them too nerd, winger was the best person to argue with on political issues.

I think suzyq is confused (or I could be wrong) but McCain was against verterns but he did vote yes for the bail out plan along with Obama.

As far as the moderator for the debate, what does the moderator do? They ask questions that it, just ask. So how can that be one sided if she is asking the questions for the candidates to answer, she doesn't give feed back or argue herself just ask the predetermined questions.

susyQ - i understand your dilemma, and feel bad for what you went thru. and i agree with what you say. however, when this happens people want to blame those that have lost their homes period. i know some very good people who lost their homes when mead and quaker oats shut down.

Do you always let boxes tell you what to do??

Posted by stjoereplant on October 3, 2008 at 5:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

nerd, do you use the va for your medical care? I'm a viet nam vet and I've used them for years, and have nothing but good things to say about them! No matter what the problem, they have showed nothing but empathy for us. If you would look at the bill that jm voted against, you'll see that it was also loaded with earmarks, which we should all be against, unless you're a company that depends on taxpayers to pay your bills!!

Posted by Rax on October 3, 2008 at 7:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

stjoereplant,
It is more fun for these folks to take these things out of context. If they read and understood the entire bill, they would see why future President McCain voted against it. That would take away their argument.....what fun is that?

Posted by rxyrch on October 3, 2008 at 8:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

well you should be glad nerd that there are those, as you put it, that were suckered in so you have the right to say what you want no matter how assinine it is.

the war in iraq didnt give anyone free speech!
if anything it has silenced over 4,000 americans... RIP...

Posted by rxyrch on October 3, 2008 at 1:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

didn't say anything about the iraq war i agree, we shouldn't be there. however, nerd addressed the military in general. my brother served for 24 years in special forces to keep this country safe and to give us our freedoms, one which includes freedom of speech. i think it was very rude of nerd to make a blanket statement such as that.

Posted by rxyrch on October 3, 2008 at 4:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

the war is just a part of what the military does. we aren't only in iraq, that is just what has everyone's attention at this time.
