I love snow in the wintertime, but ice is another story — especially on the windshield.
Those little plastic scrapers work about as well as a credit card, something I’ve actually used several times in a pinch. Metal blades work better, but they also can scratch the windshield. So I was excited to try the IceDozer, a new scraper that is supposed to “combine the design principles of heavy machinery and a flexible blade to make scrapping thin or thick ice from your automobile a quick and simple task instead of a hated chore.”
It looks impressive. At around 18 inches long, the IceDozer is like a scraper on steroids or an attachment off of a utility vehicle. Men should love it. If it had a loud motor, they wouldn’t be able to make enough of them.
I tested the IceDozer on a windshield covered with about 1/4 inch of ice. On one half, I used my regular plastic scraper, and on the other half, the IceDozer. The regular scraper had a hard time competing from the start. The IceDozer is significantly wider. You push it like a plow, so you simply scrape more ice at a time. And the design allows you to use your whole body, instead of just your wrist, so you can really get some muscle into your scraping. And the patented design actually scratches “tenderizing” marks on the ice making it more brittle. It also has a brush on the end, to sweep away the mess when you’re done.
The bottom line: Although it looks like it could clear a path of ice by itself, it’s still a plastic tool and you still need to put some muscle into it. However, the IceDozer did the job in about half the time as the regular scraper. Since the IceDozer is significantly bigger, you can’t store it in your glove box. On the plus side, you’ll be able to find it when you need it. It’s double the price of a regular scraper, but it does have a lifetime warranty. Of course, you could skip buying an ice scraper all together and wait for the defroster to melt the ice, but with gas prices these days, that’s no bargain either.
The IceDozer can only be ordered online at www.innovationfactory.com, or at Amazon.com. The price is $17.95 for the IceDozer Classic, and $19.95 for the IceDozer Plus. The shipping is free when ordering two or more IceDozers directly from the Innovation Factory.
Take your ice scraper's corner edge and use it like a knife to "cut" the ice into small squares. After doing this it's much easier to scrape off small sections of ice instead of one big one that covers your entire windshield.
