F.Y.E. closes at East Hills
by St. Joseph News-Press
Thursday, February 21, 2008

East Hills Shopping Center has lost another tenant. F.Y.E. Music Store quietly closed its doors and moved out more than a week ago.

The shopping center’s representatives said there are some stores that have chosen not to renew their leases now, in anticipation of the massive remodel of the shopping center, but they do not know if F.Y.E. is one of those.

The store pulled out because it was unable to reach a lease agreement with the mall, said John Sullivan, executive vice president and chief financial officer of the music store’s parent company, Trans World Entertainment.

“If you know of a good location, let us know,” he said. “We’re always looking.”

The news comes as the mall is steps away from renovating the mall and attracting new upscale stores by October. Plans call for a much more attractive exterior and interior, plus improvements to the southeast corner of the Belt Highway and Frederick Boulevard. The south side of the mall would be reconfigured, with an outdoor shopping area and new entrance.

The mall has experienced turnover in the past two years. KB Toy Store, Lane Bryant, Walden Books and Coach House Gifts are just a few to have left for greener pastures, while Pac Sun, Vanity and Victoria’s Secret are joining the indoor facility.

I've read that FYE has closed many stores around the country so I wouldn't read to much into this being a mall issue. Rather a result of people stealing music off the internet instead of supporting musicians.

I've heard that the prices the mall charges for rent are totally outrageous. That may be why they moved out. The mall has already stated it will increase these already high prices when the renovation is complete. In the mall's defense though, if people would stop using it as a babysitter and dropping of kids to just roam around with no intention of purchasing anything, they just tear things up, putting their feet on furniture, climbing on it, spilling stuff, leaving trash around. I think this is a large reason why the mall has seen a decline of business. It is all the loitering by the kids that make it not shopper friendly. And before anyone even thinks it, I have kids that age and I have NEVER just let them go roam the mall or hang out with friends there. As bad as it is now, can you imagine what it is going to be like after the renovation.
