Emergency responders care for the driver of a pickup involved in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 169 Saturday morning as extrication continues for a passenger.

Firefighters had to extricate three people following a head-on collision that occurred Saturday morning on U.S. Highway 169 at Route T, about four miles south of St. Joseph.

“The driver of the passenger vehicle in the southbound lane crossed the center line due to medical reasons,” said Sgt. D. Chenoweth of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Loren Elifrits, 46, of Holt, Mo., the driver of the Dodge in the southbound lane, was transported by helicopter to Heartland Regional Medical Center, where he was later treated and released.

The driver of a recreational vehicle in the northbound lane, Robert Clancy, 63, and his passenger, Perrilyn Clancy, 63, both of Plattsmouth, Neb., were transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center. Mr. Clancy was treated and released, and Mrs. Clancy was listed in good condition Saturday evening, according to the nursing supervisor. The RV came to rest on its side in a ditch after striking an embankment.

Mr. Chenoweth said both vehicles had air bags that deployed. Mr. Elifrits received a summons for careless and imprudent driving, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The Gower Fire Department, Faucett Fire Department and Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department also assisted with the accident.

“The driver of the passenger vehicle in the southbound lane crossed the center line due to medical reasons." "Mr. Elifrits received a summons for careless and imprudent driving."
It's not bad enough the man suffered an accident due to some type of medical problem, he was issued a ticket, as well. Was the condition preventable? Should Mr. Elifrits have known this was likely to happen, therefore making him negligent and deserving of a ticket? What's the rest of this story?
