Your Letters, April 6, 2008

God’s constitution

I am writing this letter in response to a call-in titled “Enjoy life” and a letter to the editor titled “God and the Constitution” in the Saturday, March 19, paper. I have to say everyone, even the caller, has gripes about things, and there is nothing wrong with letting them be known, and you do live more than once — and it is up to you where you spend the second life, in heaven or hell.

As for the letter to the editor by Rodney R. Bruns, I want to say well-written and job well done. I also want to add that liberals are destroying this country. Since God is slowly but surely being taken out of everything this country was founded on, this country is definitely falling apart. Haven’t people noticed the disasters in this country have gotten worse over the last several years? Unless we get this country back to serving God, I would say they are only going to get worse and more terrible. I hope people will think about this before it is too late.

Bobby Despain,

St. Joseph

Thank you all

A big thank-you to all! To the first responders at the scene of my accident on Dec. 31, the nurses and staff at Heartland hospital ER, ICU, Step Down on 2 West, Respiratory Therapy and Physical Therapy; to my doctors, Dr. Tadge Kanjo, Dr. Nancy Brecheisen, Dr. Don Gossett and Dr. Anne Adiculla for their diligent care, to Matthew Brumleve and Richard Rocha for their spiritual comfort and prayers.

Thanks also for the visits, cards, prayers, calls, flowers, food and monetary gifts and the overwhelming support of my family, friends and co-workers.

It is impossible for me to name all those who gave of their time and effort and worked tirelessly to make the benefits on my behalf such awesome successes. I feel I must mention Johnnie Cathcart, “The Living Legend,” for getting it all started, to Joanne Parker and Anna Taylor and all their workers for organizing the spaghetti dinner and the firefighters for the use of their hall. To Barbosa’s, O’Malley Beverage, Page 2, d.j. Jeff Sullivan, especially, Kevin Lilly of St. Joseph Beverage, my old buddies, Jeff and Fatty, and John and Kim and Rick and Jean, who bid extravagantly at the auction far above the value of goods received and to the hundreds who attended.

I’d like to thank my family, especially my wife, Monica, for spending countless hours at my bedside. She continues to care for me at home. You’re great, Bug!

Love to my son, Kyle, who is serving his second tour in Iraq. I’m sorry I missed your 21st birthday party and seeing you off at KCI.

Finally, a belated “Happy New Year” to all. Somehow I missed it.

Gratefully,

Jim Danbury and family,

St. Joseph

Ask yourself why

Why do people start a conversation by saying “I don’t want to complain” and then do? Why is it when calling a utility company you will always get an automated phone system that routes you for 30 minutes, never giving you an opportunity to talk to someone, and then when it’s time for public support for increases in rates, they are always available and make sure you get to speak to one of their representatives? Why do people feel their homes are worth a fortune when they go to sell it, yet try to convince the assessor it’s totally falling apart when their appraisal is due? Sometimes it’s hard trying to figure out people and the system, but smiling, shaking your head and avoiding logic and reason sure helps.

Jim Pawlowsk,

St. Joseph

It is always hilarious to me that the far right thinks that
America is so corrupt today and was so wonderful back in “the good old days.” Of course they are talking about civil rights, women’s rights, gay rights and the right of a woman to have control of her own body and most of all the scary noun called SCIENCE.

They abhor feminists, gays, affirmative action and contraceptives that allow sex for pleasure rather than procreation, talk of global warming and most of all
SCIENCE which could actually subvert the idea there is actually a
God who created it all.

Liberals on the other hand think that today’s ideas and laws have embraced the diversity of our society and make for a much better world for all to live in.

The possibility that global warming could be the blame for the disasters that are affecting us today is for the Christianist (those that believe that God and the Bible are absolute) is a stupid concept.

I am thankful everyday that I can spend my adult life in a world that welcomes the diversity of our society and the science that supports it.

I find it very interesting that Mr. Bruns and Mr. DeSpain seem to often have their letters printed and I can't get a single thing published. Of course, i've not tried since Sheehan left, so maybe things are different now.
One quick example: A few months back an article was printed questioning why there have been a higher number of motorcycle deaths in MO (and elsewhere) in recent years. My letter explained at least one reason: a study performed in California examined motorcycle fatalities that occurred between 4-wheelers and bikes. It showed that the size of the 4-wheelers has increased (SUVs and trucks) and because of the increased height and weight of those vehicles, bikers are getting hit higher in the torso and head, causing damage to vital organs and the brain, as opposed to the legs and knees before the proliferation of the bigger vehicles. Fairly straight-forward, right? The paper did not see any merit in publishing something factual like that. The paper much prefers tabloid-like sermons of Bruns and DeSpain espousing their views of why God is "punishing" the U.S. We have fallen away from His teachings. We continue to take God out of anything governmental and that's wrong because laws were based on God's word.
So was the U.S. following God's word when the government allowed and even encouraged white settlers to kill Native Americans and steal their land? Was it God's will when the government allowed blacks to be forcibly brought here in horrendous conditions and sold as slaves? Those actions against humanity occurred when the country was brand new, so surely if U.S. law was based on God's word, it must be in the bible somewhere that God says it's okay to kill or own other human beings. Odd, but I see that murder is against the first Commandment. Greed and Sloth, the two main reasons for slavery, are two of the 7 Deadly Sins. If the governemnt condoned these actions, how can anyone say that these laws were written with God's will in mind?
Using the Bruns-DeSpain reasoning of disasters, natural and man-made, our country has been punished many times by God. The Civil War. The Depression. The Dust Bowl. How about World War II? (It wasn't fought here, but we suffered a million American casualties.) And on and on. Bruns and DeSpain spew forth the fire and brimstone rhetoric about how America is being punished. Isn't that also the same vitriol of Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church? Hmmm . . . .

If anybody has actually met Mr. Bruns in person you would soon find out that he has the intelligence quotient of a typical ten year old.
