Teen driver hits car, which then hits city bus
by St. Joseph News-Press
Thursday, June 12, 2008

A teenage driver slammed into the rear of a stopped Chevrolet forcing it into the rear of a city bus during the noon hour Wednesday.

Alma M. Clark, 17, was driving east on Messanie Street in a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am and tried to flick a cigarette butt out the window at about 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, said Richard Bradley, a traffic officer with the St. Joseph Police Department. The butt bounced back in and she told her passenger Kyle Davidson, 15, to steer while she took her eyes off the road and felt for the butt, Mr. Bradley said. As she sat back up and resumed steering the Pontiac it slammed into the rear of a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Abby Riggs, 16. The Chevrolet was pushed into the rear of a St. Joseph Transit bus that had stopped at 3502 Messanie St. to pick up passengers. None of the bus passengers or the driver were injured.

Mr. Davidson sustained facial lacerations and Sadie Cox, 15, sustained minor injuries. Both were transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center and treated and released. Miss Cox was a passenger in Miss Riggs’ car.

Mr. Bradley cited Miss Clark for careless driving. Her vehicle was towed from the scene. The city bus and the Chevrolet were driven from the accident scene.

Officer Bradley should have given her a ticket for attempt to litter and also I thought it was the law that you had to be 18 to smoke. He should have charged her as a minor in possesion of tobacco products. Anyone that smokes should get a ashtray for their car so you do not litter by throwing your butts out the car window.

I wonder why we spend the money to make the laws when they are not enforced. Underage with a cigarette....ticket that seems simple! If attempt to litter is something you can charge for lets do that as well!

Just because they only said she was cited for careless driving does not mean she didnt receive the other tickets. Yes there is a law that you cant have cigerettes if you are under 18, funny they cant buy them, but once they turn 17 they are legally considered an adult.
