An unexpected honor
from readers
I would never have expected how excited I was to find the News-Press Readers’ Choice Silver Award for favorite columnist award in our mailbox today.
I have for years recoiled from competitions that forced journalists to compete for the affection of other journalists. When reporters lose sight of the fact that they work for the readers, they wander into dangerous territory.
But I have always appreciated the honor that came with winning the respect of readers of this newspaper. They pay the tab. They deserve the vote.
(I have always been privately envious and openly proud that Alonzo Weston — a writer who I mentored years ago — consistently trumps my best card. He is a great columnist. So is Ken Newton. Besides, I did tend to step on the toes of some powerful folks back in the day.)
The Silver Award given after I have been away from this newspaper for almost five months demonstrates a loyalty that almost brings a tear to my eyes. I am both honored and humbled.
Loyalty is important. And so I have bought $100 worth of Trails West! buttons again this year because no one should miss Joetown’s premier festival. If you can’t afford a button … let’s say you lost your job unexpectedly … just ask for one of Sheehan’s buttons. You deserve a break this weekend.

Congrats Mark!!
While I really miss the chuckles your column always gave me, I can't wait to see the great things you will do as Representative of the People of the 28th District!

I enjoyed your reading your columns (many of which I agreed with), as well as your humor and honesty in them. The editorial page has certainly lost much of its luster since your unfortunate and ill-concieved departure. Thank you also for bringing culture and fun to this city.
