Nighttime fire displaces family
A basement fire early Tuesday destroyed an older home and left a South Side family homeless. “The smoke detectors were working and sounded an alarm so that all seven members of the Helmich family could escape the two-story house safely,” said Rob Blizzard, an inspector with the St. Joseph Fire Department. Family members said that the pet dogs also aided in the escape, said Mike Dalsing, the fire chief.

Veteran remembers time at Rosecrans
In July 1944, Ronald Swartz found himself working as an aircraft mechanic at Rosecrans Memorial Airport.
But in the middle of World War II, it wasn’t a civilian airport. It was a busy military hub operated by the Army Air Corps with military planes descending and ascending at all hours.
The youngest of five brothers, Mr. Swartz was drafted out of the Pennsylvania coal fields, and he decided at an early age to leave the Rust Belt behind.

Everything is in place for a possible record voter turnout today in Buchanan County.
Saturday morning, 130 voters came to the Buchanan County Courthouse to vote and that was a record for a single morning, said Pat Conway, Buchanan County clerk. If the number of voters goes over 40,000 today, that will be a record, Mr. Conway said. And it looks like the county could break its record for absentee votes too, he said.
Turnout could be heavy enough that some voters may have to wait in line for 30 to 60 minutes during peak times at some of the larger polling places, Mr. Conway said. Peak times generally are from 6 to 8:30 a.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m.

Rosecrans needs taxiway repairs
Timing is important for major repairs at Rosecrans Memorial Airport because of coordination between the city and the Missouri Air National Guard. Unfortunately, Mother Nature threw a monkey wrench at the two entities last winter.
Rosecrans has a taxi path located east of the main runway that stretches about 8,300 feet from north to south and is used by all civilian and military aircraft.
Back in 1994, a 7-inch layer of concrete was installed on the airport taxi path over 14 inches of old concrete, said Doug Cerra, the base construction project engineer.
That should have lasted 20 years, said Col. Norm Borsi, mission support group commander.

Group returns crypt to former glory
Members of a Mount Mora association smiled Friday as their first restoration project neared completion. The Floyd family mausoleum, a concrete and stone structure, underwent restoration this week. The mausoleum, built in 1890, has seen 118 years of freezing and thawing. Water has damaged the whole structure and put it in danger of collapse, said Suzanne Lehr, a member of the Mount Mora Preservation & Restoration Association.

Iconic motel sign will shine again
Workers began assembling a neon sign Tuesday that’s familiar to many in St. Joseph, even if the location seems a bit strange. Clarence Miller, an 80-year-old glass blower and neon sign creator for Roderick Sign Co., said the Pony Express Motel sign is one of his oldest, if not the oldest, surviving sign still in use. He created the sign in 1955 for the motel that was located northeast of the intersection of the Belt Highway and Frederick Boulevard. Each night drivers on the Belt could see the familiar Pony Express rider galloping on the sign. The motel was torn down in 2007 to make way for a new bank development project that brought Panera Bread and other shops to St. Joseph.
Savannah considers merging fire departments
