Coleman, Intel join forces
It’s a first for Intel and a first for the St. Joseph School District. The 25 fifth-grade students in Glenda Haley’s class at Coleman Elementary will be among the first in the nation to try out Intel’s new netbook. The pilot program is a partnership between the school district, Intel and a group of software publishers.

CDC issues swine flu protocolIn an effort to stay ahead of the H1N1 virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta have released updated guidelines for handling H1N1 in public schools.
If the severity of the flu is consistent with what the schools saw last spring, the CDC recommends that students and staff stay at home if they have flu-like symptoms for 24 hours after they are free of fever.
Eileen Duty, coordinator of health services for the St. Joseph School District, said schools will distribute checklists to students to take home to their parents that will help determine if the child should stay home from school. She said it is the most important step in preventing a H1N1 outbreak. “If they’re sick, keep them at home,” she said.

The sign in the yard might look like any other for-sale sign, but the Scattered Site Homeownership Program behind it is helping people move toward a purchase that they might not be able to afford in these hard economic times.
“I’m hoping to buy it. I’m just trying to get my credit cleared up so I can get a loan on the house,” said Angie Gardner, who has rented a St. Joseph Housing Authority home since April 2008. “I’m trying, paying off credit cards and getting my credit better.”
The Scattered Site program, administered by the housing authority, gives those who qualify the ability to rent a three- or four-bedroom home for five years, with the option to purchase the home.
