Man dies in accident at Lifeline Foods

A contract employee died in an apparent industrial accident Thursday at Lifeline Foods, the chief executive officer of the food-processing company confirmed.

The Kiwanis Club of St. Joseph and the Key Club of Central High School are joining efforts to help provide winter coats, scarves, mittens, gloves and hats for St. Joseph’s Head Start program, managed by Community Action Partnership of Greater St. Joseph.

No injuries were reported after a South Side explosion rumbled through St. Joseph early Friday morning.
City and county law enforcement officers were called to Ag Processing on the Stockyards Expressway around 3:19 a.m. St. Joseph Police Capt. Matt Rock said an external hydrogen holding tank exploded.
Twenty-five to 30 employees were at the plant at the time of the explosion, with 10 to 15 in the area of the explosion. But no injuries were reported.

Kansas City veteran utility player Mark Teahen could soon find himself in a different uniform, according to multiple reports.
Originally reported by Bill Madden of the New York Daily News, Teahen would be traded to the Chicago White Sox in return for second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman Josh Fields. Neither team confirmed the transaction as of Thursday night, however.

The city of St. Joseph Health Department will be conducting an H1N1 Vaccination Clinic for high-risk persons on Nov. 14. The clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, or until the vaccine runs out, at the Firefighter’s Local 77 Bingo Hall, located at 4314 S. 40th St.
The department urges the public to use the Pettis Road entrance off the Belt Highway to enter the facility.
Signs will be posted to direct traffic flow.

Attorney General makes arrests in locksmith scam

A scam that had local locksmiths concerned has led to several arrests. Federal criminal charges were filed against three people and state criminal charges against a Kansas City man related to the scam. According to Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster, his office investigated Dependable Locks of Tampa, Florida, for fraudulently advertising by using at least 16 different names that all led consumers to one company and for charging customers 2 to 3 times more than the price quoted them to unlock their cars.

Flags ordered to half-staff for soldier killed in Iraq

For the St. Joseph School District, the second time is the charm. The school district’s 63-cent operating levy with a five-year sunset clause passed with 56 percent voter approval Tuesday, with 44 percent voting no. The levy won by a total of 8,952 yes votes and 7,047 against — a 1,905 vote margin of victory.

EFFINGHAM, Kan. — Before their bi-district game with Riley County, Atchison County Community High School coach Mark Smith said he saw a lot of his team in the Falcons.
Both love to keep defenses on their toes, whether or not a pass or a run is coming. Both teams play in brutal leagues. Both kicked it in gear when it counted most during district play.
But the Riley County thumped the Tigers 34-7 on Tuesday to end Atchison County’s season, and Smith wished there was a little more of the Falcons in his squad.

Facing weighty expectations, Kathleen Clevenger seamlessly assumed the mantle of Hamilton’s top runner this season.
The Hornets’ sophomore showed no signs of slowing down on the way to a individual district title at Saturday’s Class 1 District 8 meet at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. Her time of 21 minutes, 45 seconds helped her cruise past the competition and boost Hamilton to its sixth straight district crown.
Makayla Moon (6th), Lindsay Vollmer (8th) and Erin Esry (12th) also earned all-district honors for the team, which hopes to claim its sixth consecutive Class 1 title next week in Jefferson City.

“Perhaps they don’t know our rules because they’re not from here,” said Jason Park, campaign co-chairman, in a press release Thursday. Mike Veale, treasurer of the pro-levy group “Our Children. Our Future. Our Decision” filed four official complaints with the Missouri Ethics Commission, seeking compliance with Missouri campaign laws by Citizens Against Forever Tax.

West Platte rallied to beat East Buchanan 13-12 with two fourth-quarter touchdowns Thursday night at East Buchanan High School.
But a loss two weeks ago led to the end of West Platte’s season despite the victory. North Platte hammered Mid-Buchanan 30-0 just down the road in Dearborn, Mo., and West Platte’s loss to Mid-Buchanan in Week 8 left West Platte on the short end of a three-team tiebreaker.
