Thank you megafrog for clarifying what most already know.
Since those that live outside the county pay so much less in taxes, then surely they must also enjoy having their business visited, cited, and then name drug through the paper as a violation of standards that they aren't required to follow.
More, bigger government involvement...that's what we need.

So if we're going to require that the restaurant (that is outside the city) follow the same food guidelines as in the city...then also shouldn't the very same restaurnt be privvy to the city services? (Fire, police, other laws?)

Regarding just say 'I am an American.'
Not once have I heard anyone outside of our country redefine anyone who is a citizen of the USA as a "_____ American". I agree that we are all Americans and we should not try to polarize ourselves as such.
I'm as 'mixed' as the next American and have a colorful pedigree. Good grief, we act as if we're the only generation to have a mixed heritage amongst those that are different from our own. It makes us wealthy as a nation to be diverse. But the need to consistently place myself into a group so that I will 'belong' shows an immaturity that we need to grow.

Dear City of St Joseph and Mr Steve Hofferber--I agree that the owner of the property shouldn't receive a service free of charge that others did not. And I understand that FEMA doesn't reimburse for work done by a third party of a property.
However, this isn't the case where an individual or land owner is trying to 'dupe' the city...it is however the case of being caught between a rock and a hard spot for the city and land owner. Obviously, I'd rather see the city eat the charge totally (and I say that as a city resident and land owner myself) than to have an idividual beat up by 'the system'. Mr Kirby has done all that he can, let's not punish him for being a good citizen now with an ice storm that only occurs or lightening strikes that happen once in a blue moon.
Can't we give him a break? Mr Kirby, had my family had known you needed help with your property...we would have been glad to help you out. I'm sorry for your struggle.

Mr Weston,
I'm really surprised at this article and I agree, we should be making informed choices regarding our voting choices. We should search out more than just sound bites and bits of information that confirm our own fears or justifications.
However, how have you done that by learning so far left that you've blocked the light on your own writing? Wow...would have thought you'd be a bit more unbiased.
Sad...guess the mainstream media has gotten to you too.

Thank you for your article reference. I would like to add that 'some' references do include drafting as part of the hypermiling techniques. (The articles I had read included drafting as a part of the entire package.) While I was particularly refering to the practice of drafting, it is being practiced as many people think it will increase their fuel economy.
The remainder...are good reminders but many are just good common sense.
Just a note...might want to turn down the defensive mode in your responses just a bit; doubt you'll be able to carry on a productive conversation with many if you continue the flogging.
On Consumers welcome downward trend in gas prices
First, saying that Platte City is consistent in its price being lower than that of St Joseph is misleading. Mr Missouri travels through Platte City 6 days a week and Platte City being less expensive is not always the case. There have been times when the price was $.22 over that of the price in St Joseph--and we gauge that price at the Conoco on Mitchel near the Belt Highway. Remember, Platte City stations are near the interstate and can get a higher price per gallon.
Regarding hypermiling...its a dangerous practice that can get you or others seriously injured or killed. In our day it was called tail-gaiting...and it's just not smart. If you slow down to 60-65 miles per hour you'll save twice as much fuel and only add 5-6 minutes on your travel time, and you're not endangering lives in the process.
