Sense is apple. Only apple routinely spells 'article' like this = artical. In the post above there it is 'artical'. I will give apple credit though, is much less rude under the sense name.

The high numbers mentioned here are a fact (as told to me by office staff at buildings in our school district). I know at least one of the high schools has been at or above a 20% absenteeism rate for the past couple of weeks. At least three of the elementary schools have had well over 100 students absent every day for several days now. My kid's class has had less than 10 students in it for every day this week.
However, it is not our decision to close the schools. If you don't want your kid to go, keep them at home. But then people would be upset at having to find someone to watch their kids while they work. No matter what the school district does in this situation they will be criticized by some.

I believe in second chances for accidents NOT for intentional acts. Breaking into someone's home and stealing is not an accident - it is something that is thought out and a decision was made. Everyone who did this is old enough to know right from wrong (irregardless of whether their parents had poor parenting skills). Put them in jail.

A ticket for walking in the street? Ridiculous. How about ticketing those that drive around late at night with their music up so loud it rattles the windows in my house? How about doing something about people who take their domestic disputes out in the street at all hours (shouldn't they get a ticket for jaywalking instead of simply being told to go back inside by the police?)? How about the police looking out for people selling drugs in parking lots at businesses in St. Joe? How about ticketing people driving around with no license plates or temporary tags on their cars (an indicator of illegal activity)?

Why is the NP even prinintg mindless drivel like 'the haunting'? Do they think it is funny? Is the NP trying to stir something up between the city schools? What is the point of running this?

I agree that the administration in St. Joe is often times their own worst enemy (for numerous reasons ranging from a failure to communicate, a lack of outsiders with original ideas being brought into the district, bullying, favoritism, etc.) HOWEVER it is a fact that some children do come with backgrounds that makes it very difficult for them to be as successful as their more affluent counterparts.
Children from economically disadvantaged families are by and large exposed to hundreds of thousands of fewer words by the age of five. These words are in the form of simply reading them to simply hearing them as their parents tend (not always) to have a more limited vocabulary.
These same kids also tend to receive less praise at home than their counterparts. This is not politically correct but it is a statistical FACT.
These two things make it much more difficult for them to be equal to and catch up with the kids who grow up in homes with more advantages.
And since 'mm' played the 'piss poor' card lets not forget about piss poor parenting - but that is an entire other topic.

Mookie, have you been to Paducah? Everytime I have ever been to Paducah's downtown by the river it has been full of people going to restaurants, going to shops, etc. You are the first person I have ever heard speak disparagingly about it.

If you want to see an example of a river city that has a vibrant downtown, check out Paducah, Kentucky. It is on the Ohio River and has a population of only 26,000. Their city made an effort to revive their old, fading downtown years ago and it paid off in a huge way. Maybe our city leaders should contact theirs and start asking questions about how to get something like this done. Paducah tourism website: http://www.paducah.travel/
