Thanks donaldo, I'm sure I'm not the only person LOD dislikes. I just think it is unfortunate that the NP made a place for people to share opinions and instead it turns into a place where people get verbally attacked for expressing their views.
Wow I knew my post would elicit some unhappy comments but the outright spewing of hateful words from LOD is uncalled for. This reminds me why I normally don't bother to read comments. I suspect the comment section was opened up for people to state their opinions and read viewpoints from other openminded people, not a place for others to verbally attack fellow newspress readers. Obviously some people, namely LOD, have no interest in the opinions of other readers, they only want to embarrass themselves by acting innapropriately. Sad.
My husband is a smoker, I am not (quit 2 years ago). We frequently patronize the Tap Room not for it's stellar service (laughable), but for the fact that it is a smoke-free bar. We enjoy going out w/ friends but we also enjoy not smelling like a smoke stack. tydej stated that non-smokers looking for a smoke-free non-eating establishment can just spend their money elsewhere if they don't want to be subjected to smoke, the problem with that is there is no other smoke-free establishment to go to in this town. I agree that smokers have rights, but non-smokers do too. Smoking at the bar area of a resteraunt instead of the table that is two feet away is not adequate, it is merely within the guidelines of a "smoking section". I think it would behoove St. Joe to follow the trend of major cities and think about becoming a smoke-free city. I'm sure I will get some flack for this comment, I'm not trying to encite an argument, just pointing out that non-smokers don't get a choice. If you want to go to a bar in this town, bring your respirator.
Also--as far as local business owners losing money because of a smoking ban, if the whole city is smoke-free where will you lose money to? No one is going to drive to another town just to smoke a cigarette. People who want to go out and eat still will, people who want to go out and drink still will.
It is standard procedure in other departments besides sjpd for members of the tactical units to keep their weapons in the trunks of their cars. The cars are either personal use cars or unmarked cars so they are not targeted by criminals. It seems like the robbers were most likely tipped off to the fact that this officer had tactical weapons in the car to steal.
I agree that the policy seems a little lax and I am frankly surprised this has not happened before, but I also think that in the moment of panic when you have a limited amount of time to respond to a critical situation it would not seem practical to round up all your gear or unlock your gunsafe and take everything to the car. An alarm or safe inside the car is a good idea. It is also a pricey idea. But don't be so hard on the sjpd, there are many other depts who use the same practice, it isn't out of the ordinary.
What does it hurt if you see a sign in spanish? If you don't know Spanish, don't read it, read the English one that was intended for you. The concept that this is "our country" or "our territory" and all others KEEP OUT is baffling. We live in America because settlers from England moved here to have a better life. This is the land of the free, the reason America is such a great country is because we have always welcomed other cultures. America was founded as the land of opportunity and it was also called the "melting pot", meaning that immigrants were welcome to come here and start a new life. I understand not supporting illegal immigrants, but what about being tolerant to those who want to move here and have something better that they could not have otherwise?
You didn't come out of the womb speaking English, you had to learn. So allow these people time to learn the language, pick up on the culture, learn to drive, etc. Just because they need interpreters or spanish language signs doesn't mean they are lazy, stupid, or unwilling to adapt. Don't be so quick to judge.
Oh, p.s...as far as commenting on the actual story, in my opinion, judgement belongs to the Lord. I do not disagree that people have to abide by laws and serve their punishment. However, I am not a judge, jury or lawmaker so I can only hope justice was carried out by those who are in that position. It seems the accused got a fair sentence for the crime.
Like I said earlier, I normally just read these posts for laughs, however the grammatical and spelling errors were too great for me to overlook. Judges, juries and lawmakers and important for society to succeed...so are english teachers!

Sorry, I just can not stand to read these posts with spelling and grammatical errors, especially when they are made over and over again.
In general, I only read the discussions for amusement because it is ridiculous that people sit around and argue over the computer for sport.
I really have nothing to comment on this story, I was just dying over the errors! Oh well if this post gets removed, at least I feel better for the moment! I'm expecting a snide remark in retaliation, please just use spell check before you submit it!
It is a great bakery! its downtown at 5th and francis or felix...cant remember. but everything i have had from there is great, i especially like the cupcakes too!
I do know this is a problem around town at many intersections. I think this law should make all intersections with malfunctioning traffic signals operate as a four-way stop. About a week ago I was stuck for about 7-8 minutes at 36th and Faraon when the traffic signal wouldn't change for the north and southbound drivers, only the east/west lanes were green. I finally called the non-emergency line about the malfunction when the traffic was lined up to the bottom of the hill. People began inching out into the intersection then running the red light, I ended up doing the same thing. It took too long for everyone to realize the problem then start applying four-way stop rules. If we weren't afraid of being ticketed for running a red I'm sure people would not be as hestitant and would not wait as long at an intersection.
