I had the pleasure of watching Brett grow up (at the dentist) and then got re-aquainted with him when my daughter started at Benton. He was a very nice young man and very well thought of not only with kids his age but adults as well. I am sorry the world lost such a bright young man. My prayers are with you all.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Lawhon's passing. He truly was a beautiful person. I remember him being a student teacher at Truman when I was in 7th or 8th grade and I can't speak for anyone else but he certainly taught me to look at the world from a different perspective. He was a wonderful person and an inspiration to many.

First, I would also like to express my sympathy to the families of the victims. Now, not to cast aspurtions, however, nowhere in the article did it mention investigating the whereabouts of Rogers wife, and whether she was aware of his affair. I do agree that it must have been someone close to the couple. But why would they have opened the door to the stalker? And why would Roger not have tried to put on his pants? When a guy knows there is a potential for a confrontation or violence expecially from another male, he's going to at least try to put on his pants. And the killer was there for a while talking to them. Now if it were a woman who was there for the confrontation, I think he wouldn't have felt so compelled to put on his pants especially if it were his wife. He's already caught in the motel room with another woman, there's not many excuses he could have given for that one. Plus he may not have felt there would be any need to be concerned about violence with her.

I do hope the police keep investigating this one.

Let's hope that Judge Kellogg sentences him long enough that people won't have to worry about him anymore. I think life sounds good.

Redness-I will presume that you can show facts to support your "theory" that the insurance companies are paying individuals to show up at town hall meetings and start trouble. However, just for hoots and hollars please let us know where you've gotten your information before you go calling others uneducated retards.

The insurance companies have gotten way out of control. They dictate what treatment can and can not be done, what drugs can and can not be prescribed which therapy will and will not be paid for. They do not have any interest in their consumers, they are interested in the all mighty buck. I am not a supporter of the health care reform. Personally I think if more restrictions were put on the insurance companies that in itself would be a start.

Also FYI, Kathy Fisher, if your insurance company takes longer than 30 days to pay a claim they are required by law to pay interest on any money owed to you.

Pops, I agree with you. I think another reason that is being overlooked as for why the younger set didn't get out and vote is all of the negative campaigning, mudslinging and mis-information. By the time the vote came around if you were not doing your own investigation and research, one really didn't know what or who to believe. It was just easier for them to stay home and see how it turned out. I don't think Ken Reeder did anything but make people ask some very relavent questions of our school board.

I think we can add to teacherlady's laundry list that George Bush must have swooped in and stolen the swan eggs from memorial park cemetary.

howarddecker - I don't think it had anything to do with promises not being kept, and everything to do with people did not realize what they were voting for to begin with in 2004. This money was for operating costs. When this money was put in a reserve fund, voters got to thinking about the 30 million dollars and figured if the district didn't need it in 2004 they don't need it in 2009 when they are sitting on 30 million. I'm not saying whose right and whose wrong, the fact of the matter is in 2004 the district was not solvent according to state guidelines and at the moment it now is. For how long remains to be seen.

What we don't want is the State of Missouri coming in and taking over our district. Therefore, we need to come up with a solution that will pass, and I for one, like it or not say add the sunset clause back in and put it to the voters one more time.

On What is to blame for the failure of the school levy and bonds?

Posted on April 11, 2009 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)

apple, I agree with everything you just said. I know the district needs to keep the .63 levy for operations. Just as I think the majority of the citizens would have agreed, had it been explained just like you did on TV or in an editorial or whatever, without the mention of the bond issue. But, having said that, the main thing that voters were looking at was the 30 million in reserves. Having to keep that money in reserves to keep the district solvant according to state guidelines is where you start losing the voters. They look at 30 million and think, wow if the district has that much money, they don't need my .63 cents. Right wrong or in between, that is the way it is. If that type of thinking is not addressed in a respectful manner, you get a no vote. Plain and simple. That is why I think we need to tackle both of these issues seperately and one at a time. If the only way to get the levy passed is with a sunset clause, put one on. All it means is that it will be re visited in 5 years. In that 5 years improvements and programs should have been instituted that will show the voter what they got for their money. If all they got for their money is a solvant district, then that should be the main focus. Seperately, to get the tax passed will most definately be more difficult. But again, show the voters a visible plan, that includes St. Joseph businesses involvment such as construction, lodging, restaraunts ect., so not only will you be addressing the working public, but also maintaining a balance with the community. This should not be an "us against them" type of thing. When you start including all people of the community in your vision and they can see the benefit, the votes will come easier. Seriously, Ken Reeder and Axiom did not have as much to do with the failure as you think.
